High Tog Rating Carpet

Both the carpet and the underlay will have a separate tog rating and a combined rating over 2 0 isn t really suitable for underfloor heating.

High tog rating carpet. A low rating is perfect for use with under floor heating while a high rating means the carpet and underlay already offer good insulation and therefore isn t suitable for under floor heating. A tog rating indicates the effectiveness of a materials heat insulation. The higher a material s tog rating the more effective it will be at retaining heat and the better it will be as an insulating material. Higher tog carpet combined with underfloor heating is no disaster it will simply slow the heat transfer from the heating system to the room above.

Carpets with a lower tog rating are ideal for rooms with underfloor heating whereas higher tog ratings are better for typically colder areas. If using underlay with underfloor heating you won t need anything above a total rating of 2 5 tog. Other considerations such as to the weight of the carpet should also be considered when buying. Both underlay and carpet carry a tog rating.

A material with a high tog value would make an excellent winter coat as it would retain a large proportion of your body s heat while wearing it while a coat manufactured from a low tog rated material would be better suited for use in warmer seasons as it would allow a far greater amount of your body s heat to radiate away while being worn. Wool carpets have a higher tog rating naturally than other fibers as do foam underlays over felts. Put simply the higher the tog rating the greater the insulation.
